Community ProfileSituated in a prime location along Interstate 39, Wenona is 20 miles south of I-80, 40 miles north of Bloomington/Normal, and 110 miles southwest of Chicago. Wenona is close to urban areas to benefit from the social and business activities found there, but far enough away to enjoy the quality of life found in rural communities. With a population of 1,000, Wenona may be small in size, but their ideas for today and the opportunities for the future are enormous. Wenona is open and prepared for business with available land growth. An Enterprise Zone, a Tax Increment Financing District, and a new business development site at the I-39/SR-17 interchange have been established to encourage development. The city is also a member of the North Central Illinois Council of Governments and the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce. The locally owned Wenona State Bank is very active in community projects. Wenona's largest company, Oak State Products, employs 160, and produces bakery items for nationally recognized companies [Archway]. The downtown district consists of businesses that have been family owned for generations. |
